Women have made their presence felt in almost all spheres of life these days. Yet, there are fewer women role models out there that we know of to take inspiration from. Here, we take a look at some of the most inspirational and ground-breaking women, from the past and present, that we can all learn a thing or two from.
These women teach us that you don’t need to have pedigree, or be raised in a certain time or environment to take a strong stance, be successful and ultimately contribute to society. All these inspirational women have few things in common: grit, tenacity and commitment.
Eleanor Roosevelt famously challenged everyone “to do one thing every day that scares you”. Here are few women we may not have known that echoed that call to arms and some!
1. Nirupama Rao
She was the first woman full-term foreign secretary in India’s history. She served as India’s Foreign Secretary from 2009 to 2011, as well as being India’s Ambassador to the United States, China and Sri Lanka (High Commissioner) during her career
2. Chitra Ramakrishna
Chitra Ramkrishna (born 1963) is the first and former woman managing director and chief executive officer of the National Stock Exchange (NSE). As the MD and CEO, Ms. Ramkrishna has not only maintained the rich legacy of this great institution, but her tireless endeavour has ensured it has scaled new heights. Under her leadership, the NSE became a transparent market ecosystem thanks to her efforts of reaching out to thousands of locations in the country, and not just that, NSE reaped a record profit of Rs.860 crore in 2011!
3. Sarla Thakral
The first Indian woman to earn and aviation license at the age of 21 to fly an aircraft!
4. Saalumarada Thimakka
She planted and nurtured 384 banyan trees along the stretch of a highway. She is one of the most inspirational environmentalist. Every single day she carried water for 4 kilometers to water these trees.
Mayilamma has something in common with the very revered Erin Brockovich. In that, she took on a fight against the giant Coca Cola whose activities were polluting the local villages. Eventually, her activism and campaigns led to them shutting down their plants and drove the company out of the area
6. Tessy Thomas
The first woman in India to head the Agni-VI missile project that was successfully testing in India, and she is rightly known as “India’s Missile Woman”!
7. Rimppi Kumari
Who said farming is a man’s territory? Meet Rimppi who inherited 32 acres of farms from her father and runs it along with her sister!
8. Bhakti Sharma
The first Asian woman, and the youngest one at that, to swim and create a record in the cold waters of the Antartic!
They are just a small representation of the amazing, successful and inspiring women that we can all look up to as role models!
